Animal Census - Corbett Tiger Reserve

The Corbett Tiger Reserve authorities conducted animal census in the summers of 2001. Results of the census have recently been announced.

In India, tigers and other bigger cats are counted by pugmark tracing, a popular method for wildlife census among the NGOs and government authorities. The left hind pugmark of the animal is traced on a glass frame and transferred to Form-D, a document required for census, along with some other vital information such as sex, age, direction of movement of animal, etc. It is on the analysis of these pugmark that the population of the big cats is estimated in an area.

On the other hand, elephants and other wild animals are counted by block count method. This year CTR had invited interested stakeholders in the Corbett area for help in the census. Many NGOs and individuals participated in the exercise.
