Ranthambhore gets its name from two hills, Ran and Thambhor, amongst which is situated one of the finest Tiger habitats of the Indian subcontinent. It has glorious history and was the stronghold of the Yadav Kings in the 8th Century. It came under Chauhans and was ruled by them from 10th Century onwards. The Mugal emperor Akbar and Aurangzeb also occupied this magnificent fort. Finally it was taken over by Mother Nature who converted it back to the breathtaking ecosystem, it today is.
Ranthambhore National Park is spread over an area of 392 sq. km and punctured with Lakes, Waterholes and numerous Streams. The characteristic ruggedness of the topography of this region comprises of delightful mix of cliffs, narrow valleys and plateaus. The three lakes - Padam Talao, Rajbagh and Milak Talao are the center of all wildlife activities.
Besides Tigers, for whom Ramthambhore is world famous, one can encounter Spotted Deer, Sambar, Chinkara, Bluebull, Leopard, Caracal, Jungle cat, Sloth Bear, Jackal and Ratel. As far as the avian world is concerned one can count more than 300 species of Snakes and Lizards, Marsh Crocodile, which can be seen basking on the edge of any of the Lakes.
Ranthambhore Regency is a lodge known for its hospitality. Situated at a distance of a 2km from the city of Sawai Madhopur on the periphery of the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve, it offers cozy rooms and cottages and serves excellent food. One can get the feel of the rich Rajasthani culture at one of the cultural evenings organized at the lodge. Morning and evenings safaris to the park are organised and can be very thrilling, as it is comparatively easy to spot Tigers at Ranthambhore.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Jaipur (180kms.)
By Rail: Sawai Madhopur (10 kms. From the National Park ) is on the main line between Delhi and Mumbai. There is a direct rail link between Sawai Madhopur and Jaipur.
By Road: Sawai Madhopur is well connected by road to the major cities of Rajasthan. There is a good road between Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur via Tonk.
